Working with Production Designer Oliver Scholl & Director Andy Serkis on Venom: Let There Be Carnage

It was a privilege to work alongside Oliver Scholl, the visionary production designer of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Known for his previous work on Spider‑Man: Homecoming, Oliver crafted richly detailed sets—both practical and digital—that grounded the film’s cosmic chaos in a tactile reality. We transformed locations across London and the UK into gritty San Francisco sets, to recreating iconic city landmarks and ensuring seamless integration with VFX-heavy moments.

Underpinning this design was the direction of Andy Serkis, who brought a fresh approach to the franchise. Serkis prioritised the emotional arc of the strange couple at the film’s centre—Eddie Brock and Venom—describing their dynamic as an “Odd Couple exploding moment” and emphasising their relationship as the core of the story. Serkis didn’t merely stage action—he treated Venom and Carnage as characters with real emotion and personality. This was especially evident in how he directed movement: for Carnage, Serkis worked with dancers and performers in motion-capture sessions to develop those unpredictable, “octopus-like” motions that make the character feel truly alive.

Final Thoughts

Working on Venom: Let There Be Carnage was a thrilling convergence of design innovation, directorial vision, and actor-driven creativity. Oliver Scholl’s immersive environments paired seamlessly with Andy Serkis’s character-focused direction to deliver something vibrant, visceral, and emotionally grounded—no small feat for a big-budget comic book sequel.

I am proud to have supported this bold chapter in the Sony Spider‑Man Universe.
