Zombies in Suburban London

One of the stranger location briefs I’ve worked on over the years involved finding suburban London locations for a zombie apocalypse.

Working with director Tom Kuntz and MJZ London, the eBay commercial needed an everyday British setting — residential streets and a typical market town — before filling it with wandering zombies.

There is always something slightly surreal about standing in an otherwise perfectly normal suburban street surrounded by the undead.

Although, having already worked on World War Z, I was probably a little more used to zombies wandering around than most.

Finding the Locations

The location brief was all about finding places that felt familiar and ordinary.

That contrast was really the point. Normal residential streets and recognisable British surroundings suddenly taken over by zombies made the whole thing much funnier.

For a location scout, it was a slightly unusual way of looking at suburban London — trying to imagine how a perfectly innocent cul-de-sac might look during the end of the world.

Working with Tom Kuntz and MJZ

Tom Kuntz is known for his brilliantly surreal style of comedy, and the eBay Zombie Apocalypse commercial was certainly no exception.

It was a clever, very funny concept and another memorable shoot with MJZ London.

Not every day at work involves zombies wandering around suburban London.

Then again, in my job, you never really know.
